David Virelles got his musical “genes” from his singer-songwriter father and Santiago symphony flautist mother. He started studying at age seven in prestigious music schools in Cuba, then discovered his grandfather’s jazz collection.
At 17, in 2001, he left for Canada as a protegé of Canadian jazz great and Cuban music-phile Jane Bunnett. He quickly appeared on her Grammy-nominated /Alma de Santiago/, which features many remarkable artists from that area of Cuba.
With Bunnett’s Spirits of Havana, toured throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Cuba with audiences marveling at the skills of this unknown but brilliant young pianist. Featured as arranger/performer on her /Red Dragonfly/, he also contributed to her Juno Award winning c.d’s, /Radio Guantanamo/ and /Embracing Voices/.
David has studied with top musicians in Toronto and graduated from the jazz program at Humber College. He also studied with Barry Harris and is currently studying composition with Henry Threadgill in New York.
He has performed and recorded with top musicians in Canada like Don Thompson, Rich Brown, Kirk MacDonald, Roberto Occhipinti and Phil Dwyer. He has also worked with such as Dewey Redman, Steve Coleman, Rudresh Mahantappa, Mark Turner, Paul Motian and David Binney.
His own quintet released its debut cd Motion in 2007, after winning the Grand Prix de Jazz award at the Montréal Jazz Festival. That same year, he was nominated for the National Jazz Awards as Best Latin Jazz artist, and also won the CBC Galaxy Rising Star Award. In 2003 he became the first recipient of the Oscar Peterson prize, presented by Peterson himself.
/Motion/ displays his virtuosity and endeavor to create original music that is both an invitation to reflect as well as a sonic depiction of life’s experiences.
He will be playing with another great innovator, Steve Coleman, in 2011, as well as with a quartet lead by Mark Turner featuring legendary drummer Paul Motian and Ben Street. He continues to develop his own musical concepts via his 3D Trio (which features Thomas Morgan and Marcus Gilmore) as well as Continuum, a collaborative effort featuring Ben Street and drummer Andrew Cyrille.
